Travelling to Brisbane for surgery

Dr Justin Perron sees patients who travel to Brisbane from interstate and overseas. Surgery away from home needs more planning than surgery close to home, so this page explains what to expect before you book flights or accommodation.

All cosmetic surgery in Australia must follow the Medical Board of Australia’s guidelines for cosmetic surgery. These apply to every patient, wherever they live:

  • You need a referral from a registered medical practitioner, such as your GP, before your consultation.
  • You will have at least two consultations before surgery, and at least one must be in person with Dr Perron.
  • There is a cooling-off period of at least 7 days after you give informed consent before a deposit can be paid or surgery can go ahead.
  • You will be screened for underlying psychological factors, including body dysmorphic disorder, as part of safe care.

These steps mean you should plan to be in Brisbane, or to travel more than once, well before your surgery date.

Planning your consultations and stay

An initial video consultation may be possible to talk through your concerns and whether travelling for surgery is practical for you. It does not replace the in-person consultation with Dr Perron that is required before cosmetic surgery.

When planning your stay, please consider:

  • How long to stay: Dr Perron will advise how long you should remain in Brisbane after surgery. This depends on the procedure and how your recovery progresses. Flying too soon after surgery can increase the risk of blood clots. For example, patients travelling for a breast reduction in Brisbane should plan to stay for their early wound checks.
  • Follow-up appointments: wound checks and early follow-up take place at Herstellen Clinic in Spring Hill, so staying nearby is helpful.
  • A support person: you will need someone with you for the first days after surgery.
  • Care at home: before you travel, arrange for your own GP to provide ongoing care once you return home.

Risks of having surgery away from home

All surgery carries risk. When you travel for surgery, complications such as infection, wound healing problems, fluid collections or blood clots may appear after you have returned home, when your surgeon is not close by. Some complications need prompt review or further surgery. Dr Perron will discuss your individual risks at consultation, and we encourage you to talk with your GP before deciding to travel for surgery.

Fees and enquiries

Every patient’s needs are different, so fees are provided as an individual written quote after your consultation with Dr Perron. Your quote will set out the surgeon’s, anaesthetist’s and hospital fees. Overseas visitors are generally not eligible for Medicare rebates, so please check your own insurance cover before you travel.
