What Is Breast Augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty)?
Breast Augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures and even though it is considered to be mainly a cosmetic treatment, it can work to provide a number of functional benefits as well. The surgery seeks to increase the size and reshape a woman’s breast.
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) surgery can be undertaken for a few reasons:
- Rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy
- To achieve improved projection
- Help provide a more balanced shape
- Increase the general size of the breasts
- Treat any deformities or abnormalities
- Reconstruction after a mastectomy
Whatever your reason for choosing breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty), Dr Perron will meet with you multiple times to discuss your expectations of the surgery. His close-knit team will work closely with you to ensure you get the results you desire.
Breast Augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) Surgery: What Does It Entail?
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) surgery, much like the women they treat, is unique in each case. And like each case, the details of the surgery depend on your surgeon. Usually, breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) can be completed in phases.
Phase 1
All breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) surgery is performed with the administration of a general anaesthetic to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. We will provide you with all the necessary support and our priority is to ensure your safety and security during and after the procedure.
Phase 2
Next comes the actual incision which can be done in one of three ways. The incision made around the nipple known as a peri-areolar incision, through the armpit or trans-axillary method in the crease of the breast or inframammary fold. All three of these incisions are different and will provide a range of respective pros and cons.
Phase 3
Placement of the implant is generally done behind the chest muscle with a part of the implant also inserted behind the breast tissue. In some cases, the implant can be placed directly behind the breast tissue, but this depends on a great many factors all of which will be discussed with you.
Phase 4
Closing the incisions require the use of layered sutures, skin adhesive and surgical tape to ensure you heal effectively. The prominence of any scarring in the area depends on a number of things such as genetics, any infections acquired, the size of the incision and attempting vigorous movement before you have adequately healed.
Phase 5
The results of your breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) surgery can be seen directly following your treatment and the procedure itself takes anywhere from 60 – 90 minutes. The recovery period may vary, but traditionally you will feel like yourself after a couple of weeks and be back exercising in just a few months.
